Wasps or Yellow Jackets will black and yellow markings, the females are very fast and will sting, attack, and protect with little provocation. Yellow jackets will sting rapidly and repeatedly. Yellow jackets have small barbed stingers and will sometimes become lodged beneath the skin and will be almost impossible to remove. The disturbing effects of their stings will last a week or longer and are very painful. Yellow jackets will build nests in tree’s, bushes, burrows, and tree stumps. Yellow jackets have large mandibles and will chew wood and bark from tree’s and make a paper like pulp. They feed on other insects, nectar, and fruit. Queens will come out of dormancy late spring or early summer, find a site to build the nest and and start laying eggs. The eggs will hatch from 50 brood cells and the Queens will feed the larvae for about 2 1/2 weeks. The workers will continue to feed the young so that they can continue to expand the nest, forage for food and care for the Queens and the young, one colony will produce 4500 workers.
